gunaydin.... good morning! it's tuesday morning in cihangir and i am sitting here with the cat (note: we have still not decided on a name for him, i feel bad.... sometimes he's siyahkedi, sometimes he's pony or whatever we decide to call him that day. i think he's having an identity crisis!).

he's staring at me now. i think he'd like to surf the net if he could just figure out how.....

looks like another lovely day outside. spring has finally appeared and the heat of summer is creeping in. tulips are blooming everywhere and the trees are all green and beautiful. winter in istanbul is so grey and cold that you forget what the color green looks like. i welcome the change.

selin is back from almost 4 weeks in france, visiting her mother (who had surgery) and various other friends and family members. it's nice to have her back! the old man downstairs (aydin bey) invited us over for dinner one night, on the condition that we teach him how to make turkish coffee. aydin bey's wife died about 2 months ago (he misses the turkish coffee she used to make) and he's a really sweet old man, always looking out for us and everyone else on our street. i have ABSOLUTELY no idea how to make turkish coffee, but selin does.... so i think selin will be giving aydin bey and i a turkish coffee lesson.

traditionally, in turkey when a man and woman are getting engaged, the woman has to make turkish coffee for the man's parents. it has to be perfect because it's one of these "tests" that demonstrate what a good wife she'll be. i'm trying to think if there's a similar cultural thing in the US, but i don't think there is...? correct me if i'm wrong.

anyway.... it's tuesday. it's my day off. i'm going to see some jazz singer tomorrow night with a bunch of people from the bakirkoy branch of wall street. should be interesting, although i've been thinking for the past 2 weeks that we were seeing "dinah shore" -- but then i thought, "it can't be dinah shore... she's dead, isn't she?" well, yes...after a little internet research i discovered that dinah shore passed away in 1994, so i don't think i'm going to see her in concert tomorrow night. instead, i will be seeing diane schuur. hopefully she's still with us.

i can't think of a single equivalent american custom, but i will say that i've made turkish coffee several times for my future turkish in-laws, and although it certainly doesn't suck, they always seem to giggle when i present my brew. hmmmm.

I sent this the other day...but Aunt Mariann's computer was shipped on the Mayflower and apparently sent the message into cyberspace.

Anyway...Dinah Shore! That is so funny! Diane Schuur...oh my gosh...how was she? I am green with envy.

It is fabulous to be home in Colorado, but I sure wish I was closer to Grandma.

Give the poor cat a name!
